LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech defense provided a little offense of its own as both the Black and White teams posted defensive scores Saturday in the 2002 Spring Game. The Black Team won 29-20.

Linebacker Lawrence Flugence, a preseason Nagurski Trophy candidate and member of the Black Team, scored the first touchdown of the game on a 30-yard interception return in the second quarter. Flugence, who battled illness all day, played only in the first half.

Following a 98-yard kickoff return by Black Team member Ivory McCann to start the third quarter, defensive end Aaron Hunt returned a Sonny Cumbie interception 30 yards for the White Team's first score of the game.

Placekicker Robert Treece opened the scoring with two field goals to give the Black Team a 6-0 lead before Flugence's touchdown. Treece later added a third field goal, a 46-yarder, and led the team in scoring with 10 points.

On the Black Team's final score of the day, Kliff Kingsbury hit wide receiver Trey Haverty with a 6-yard strike to give the Black Team a 29-14 lead. Kingsbury finished the afternoon with 263 yards and a touchdown on 25-of-38 passing.

Walk-on receiver Joey Hawkins caught touchdown passes of five and six yards from Cody Hodges and B.J. Symons, respectively, to lead the White Team with 12 points. The two receptions were his only catches of the day. Symons finished the day with 149 yards on 14-of-26 passing and a touchdown pass, while Hodges was 6-of-10 for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Anton Paige (Black) led all receivers with 106 yards on seven catches, while Taurean Henderson (White) was the leading rusher with 29 yards on seven carries.
