Final Stats

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior QB B.J. Symons completed 19-of-24 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns, while backup QB Sonny Cumbie threw for 256 yards on 15-of-17 passing as Texas Tech amassed 538 yards of total offense in Saturday's Red-Black Scrimmage at Jones SBC Stadium.

Symons and Cumbie, who threw two touchdowns passes each, were joined by sophomore QB Cody Hodges in the rotation. Hodges went 4-of-13 for 36 yards.

Among the offensive highlights was an 80-yard touchdown strike from Cumbie to WR Joey Hawkins and Cumbie's 60-yard scoring pass to WR Trey Haverty. Hawkins finished the scrimmage with two receptions for 92 yards, while Haverty also grabbed two passes for 68 yards.

RB Taurean Henderson and IR Wes Welker led with six receptions for 36 yards and five catches for 79 yards, respectively. In addition to Cumbie's two touchdown passes, Symons connected with WR Carlos Francis on a 26-yard scoring strike and found WR Nehemiah Glover for a 10-yard score. Junior RB Johnnie Mack led the Red Raiders on the ground with 16 yards on four carries.

Defensively, freshman LB Brock Stratton led the defense with four tackles, including an immediate ankle tackle on Henderson behind the line of scrimmage. LB Jason Wesley and FS Byron Johnson logged three tackles each. Junior college transfer CB Jamaal Jackson tallied the defense's lone interception of the day, snagging a Cumbie pass in the endzone after getting position on Glover, the play's intended receiver.

The Tech offense ran 70 plays on the day, 16 of which were rushing attempts. The unit logged 21 first downs and was 3-of-11 on third-down conversions.

Texas Tech opens the 2003 season Sat., Aug. 30, against SMU at Jones SBC Stadium.
