LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech running back Wes Welker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) was named to the North American Inter-Fraternity Conference All-America Football Team for the 2001 season, announced today by the NIC. Red Raider quarterback Kliff Kingsbury (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) picked up honorable mention honors.

Welker, a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, was named to the first team as a running back and joins other collegiate standouts such as Kahlil Hill (Iowa) and Trent Smith (Oklahoma). Kingsbury, a member of Sigma Chi, was one of seven quarterbacks named to the honorable mention team. No second team was selected.

Welker finished the 2001 season fourth in receiving on the team with 50 catches for 582 yards. He also led the Red Raiders with 34 punt returns for 271 yards. His 85-yard return for a touchdown at Nebraska is the longest of his career and the second-longer return in history against the Huskers.

Kingsbury has established himself as one of the nation's best quarterbacks and is a Heisman Trophy candidate entering this season. He has 33 individual school records and needs 2,600 passing yards this season to become only the 19th player in NCAA history to pass for 10,000 yards.

Various fraternity headquarters, sports information directors at schools, Greek advisors and Inter-Fraternity Councils and individuals submitted nominations for the team.
