Jace Amaro became Texas Tech's highest drafted player since the 2008 season when he was selected in the second round (49th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New York Jets on Friday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Amaro, a native of San Antonio, declared for the draft immediately following Texas Tech's 37-23 victory over No. 16 Arizona State in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Diego. The announcement came on the heels of one of the best seasons in NCAA history by a tight end.

In his junior year, Amaro amassed 1,352 receiving yards along with 106 receptions on his way to unanimous All-American honors. The 1,352 single-season receiving yards now ranks as the best by a tight end in NCAA history while the 106 receptions ranks second.

Those eye popping numbers caught the attention of voters across the country as became just the sixth unanimous All-American in school history. In addition, he was named the College Football Performance Awards National Tight End of the Year and was a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

His performance against Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl helped land him on both the Sports Illustrated and ESPN All-Bowl teams. He led the team in that game with eight catches for 112 yards.

Amaro is the first Red Raider to be selected in the NFL Draft since the Pittsburgh Steelers took Baron Batch in the seventh in 2010. He is the highest drafted Red Raider since Michael Crabtree (1st round, San Francisco) and Darcel McBath (2nd round, Denver) in 2008.

He is the ninth all-time Red Raider to be taken in the second round of the draft and is the first Red Raider selected by the New York Jets since Marcus Coleman (DB) in 1996.
