July 17, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced the 2013 Preseason All-Big 12 Football team, chosen by media representatives who cover the league, as four Red Raiders were selected while senior wide receiver Eric Ward, junior tight end Jace Amaro, sophomore offensive lineman Le'Raven Clark and senior defensive lineman Kerry Hyder were selected.
The team was announced today in advance of next week's Big 12 Conference Media Days in Dallas, July 22-23.
It marked the most Red Raiders selected to the preseason team since also having four in 2002. In fact, it was the first time Tech had multiple players named to the list since 2008 (3).
Ward (Wichita Falls, Texas) returns for his senior season after a standout junior campaign with 82 receptions, 1,053 yards and 12 touchdowns. He joined former Red Raider Michael Crabtree as the only players in school history to catch 11 touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.
He enters his final season as a Red Raider ranked fourth in school history with 23 career touchdown receptions and owns seven career 100-yard receiving games. In addition, this week Ward was named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List for the second consecutive season.
Clark (Rockdale, Texas) was named to a pair of Freshman All-America teams during his first collegiate season in 2012, while becoming the first Tech offensive player to earn Freshman All-America honors since 2007 (Crabtree). He was a key part of the Red Raiders offensive line in 2012 that led a running backs group to 1,674 rushing yards during the regular season - the most by Texas Tech since 1998.
Clark has already been named to the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award Watch Lists this season.
Amaro (San Antonio, Texas) played in seven games as a sophomore in 2012 with 25 catches, 409 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Four publications named him All-Big 12 following the 2012 season.
During his sophomore season, Amaro averaged 16.4 yards per catch, the best average by a Red Raider since 2008 (Edward Britton). His four touchdown catches ranked third on the team.
Hyder (Austin, Texas) received All-Big 12 first team honors from five publications in 2012, including the Dallas Morning News, Austin American Statesman, Waco Tribune-Herald, AP and CBS Sports.
He led the team and ranked fifth in the Big 12 with 14 tackles for a loss while adding 5.5 sacks, which ranked seventh in the Big 12. His 10.5 tackles for a loss in league action were the most by a Red Raider since 2009 (Brandon Sharpe).
Hyder has been named to three preseason award watch lists including, Outland Trophy, Bronko Nagurski and Lombardi Award.
