Potts Named to O'Brien Watch List|
Aug. 4, 2009
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts was one of 33 players nationally named to the 2009 O'Brien Award Watch List, announced this week by the Davey O'Brien Foundation in Fort Worth, Texas. Potts is one of six quarterbacks from the Big 12 Conference named to the list.
"This is a nice honor for Taylor, and he's very deserving of being mentioned with the other quarterbacks," Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach said. "The fact that he hasn't started a game is overshadowed by his ability. He's been around the program now for three seasons and is a veteran in this offense."
Potts is one of two players on the list that doesn't have a career start -- Aaron Corp (USC). Potts, a junior from Abilene, Texas, enters fall camp as the starter, taking over for former O'Brien semifinalist and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner Graham Harrell. In 15 career games, Potts has completed 55-of-85 passes for 669 yards and five touchdowns.
In addition to Potts, Big 12 quarterbacks Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Robert Griffin (Baylor), Colt McCoy (Texas), Todd Reesing (Kansas) and Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State) are among the candidates.
The O'Brien committee will follow performances of all FBS quarterbacks until semifinalists are announced October 26. Finalists will be named November 23 and the winner will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 10 in Orlando, Fla.
Texas Tech begins fall camp Saturday and opens the 2009 season Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. against North Dakota at Jones AT&T Stadium. For ticket information, contact the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office at (806) 742-TECH or (888) GO-BIG-12 or purchase tickets on-line at www.texastech.com.
