Aug. 9, 2013

The Texas Tech football team is nearing the end of its first full week of fall training camp.'s Nick Tam caught up with defensive lineman Kerry Hyder to get his thoughts on the team's progress through six full days of practice. It seems the intensity has picked up in practice. Do you think this will translate to the fall?

Kerry Hyder: We try to make every practice like a game situation. We try to go full speed in practice so hopefully it will carry over to the season. Do you think Defensive Coordinator Matt Wallerstedt brings a new attitude to the defense?

Kerry Hyder: He definitely brings the energy that we haven't seen in a long time here. Every weekend and practice, all of us try to bring the same energy to keep up with him. A lot of excitement and positive energy has been flowing through the fans. Does this motivate your team in any way?

Kerry Hyder: Definitely. With Kingsbury coming back and starting a new era we try to bring light into the community. We don't want to let anybody down and want to come in strong. We want to have a successful season for the fans. You've changed positions a couple times. How do you feel about the change?

Kerry Hyder: It's really not much of a change because I've played several positions. You'll see me play nose guard and defensive end so I don't think it will be a problem. Seeing how the defensive team has improved from two seasons ago, what do you expect from defense this season?

Kerry Hyder: I expect another improvement. We have a lot of veterans and they want the new guys to take a big step as well.
