Red Raiders Go 184 Plays In First Scrimmage

POST-SCRIMMAGE UPDATE:
After 184 plays, the first fall scrimmage is complete from Jones AT&T stadium. Some notables: The scrimmage was not full-contact. Michael Brewer had an impressive day. The true freshman quarterback from Lake Travis led all quarterbacks in passing going 24-for-38 for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns Seth Doege was just behind him going 21-37 for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Red Raiders had 143 yards on the ground and just two rushing touchdowns--both coming from senior Aaron Crawford. Ronnie Daniels led all rushers with 10 attempts for 43 yards. The defense recorded 13 sacks on the day with four players recording two sacks. No interceptions were recorded. Comments from head coach Tommy Tuberville will follow shortly.

Seth Doege went 6-of-9 passing for 58 yards on the drive. Doege is now, 21-of 37, for 284 and two touchdowns on the day. UPDATE:

Brewer went 5-for-5 on the drive for 45 yards including a 13-yard pass to Tyson Williams, setting up the touchdown. Brewer is now leading the quarterbacks statistically going 23-of-33 passing for a total of 314 yards and three touchdowns.

The run was set up after a 14-yard pass from Seth Doege. We are nearing the 150 play mark with little sign of stopping. Head coach Tommy Tuberville anticipated the scrimmage would run between 120-150 plays.

Texas Tech has run 31 plays on the ground for a total of 109 yards, averaging of just over 3 yards per-run. Freshman Ronnie Daniels leads the team with 43 yards on 10 attempts, while Eric Stephens has 35 yards on three attempts. The Red Raiders however, are not playing full-contact which has made running the ball a challenge for the backs.

Brewer went 5-of-5 for 47 yards on the drive capped off with his second touchdown pass of the day. Brewer is now 12-of-15 passing on the day for 236 yards during the scrimmage.

Carona has connected on two previous field goals, a 43-yard attempt and a 29-yard attempt.

Doege connected with receiver Jacoby Franks for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the end zone. Doege is now 11-of-18 for 182 yards on the scrimmage. Meanwhile the defense has recorded four sacks on the day. Leon Mackey is leading the unit with two.

Seth Doege led the drive and was 3-of-4 for 52 yards. Doege is now 7-of-13 on the day for 117 yards and one touchdown pass. Jacob Karam is now in under center to lead the offense from the 4 yard-line.

All four quarterbacks have now played in the scrimmage. Freshman Bradley Marquez caught a 46-yard pass on the drive and redshirt freshman Shawn Corker caught a 20-yard pass. Corker has three catches for 45 yards.

Young also broke free for a 13-yard run. Freshman Ronnie Daniels had one rush for two yards on the drive.

Junior college transfer Leon Mackey was in on both sacks. Doege got off to a slow start, completing just one of his first four passes, but got on a roll after slinging an 18 yard pass to Cornelius Douglas down the middle of the field. Eric Stephens had a 22 yard rush on the drive.

Again, the coaches stressed yesterday that they expect to answer several questions today as they get their first live look at the squad after a week of training camp under their belts. Expect a big day from Seth Doege after a solid week of practice. Also, several freshmen look to make a statement including Ronnie Daniels and Blake Dees. Today, against a live defense, Doege will get his chance to separate himself, while Karam will have the opportunity to make a statement. We have been told that between 120-150 snaps are planned today between three groups. Kickoff is now under ten minutes away here at Jones AT&T Stadium.
