LUBBOCK, Texas - Spike Dykes Quotes

Overall impressions after UTEP

"I take my hat off to the crowd. They were great. It really does help to have a loud fun crowd at the game. It was a big league atmosphere. Our players appreciate it because it creates a home field advantage."

"When Matt hit Donnie Hart it gave us a feeling of confidence. I think we were positively patient. We didn't panic and made some adjustments at half-time. It was a nice start. It was good to see Matt Tittle come in and do what he's prepared for. It wasn't a surprise he's prepared well all fall. I thought Ricky ran well. The offensive line got better as the game went on. The defense played an excellent three quarters, but we gave up some in fall and gave up a lot of yards. The kicking game was good. I was glad to see Jaret Greaser kick with confidence. Brian Roberson punted better than he has in a long time. Robert Monroe did a good job snapping and Jeremy Hernandez holding on kicks. Special teams did a good job. We were pleased with the overall effort of the team."

On North Texas

"Now we play a team that beat us last year despite us being highly favored. We weren't ready to play last year and I take the blame for that. I'm not a revenge guy; we're out to play better than we did during the first game."

"Playing in Texas Stadium is great because we have so many kids from the area. We haven't played there since we played against Oklahoma State two years ago. It is good for the player's parents and the alumni in the area to be able to see the team play."

On Rob Peters Return

"We will treat him like any other starter that gets hurt. When he is well, we will put him back in the starting lineup."

On the offensive line

"We needed to play them a long time together to develop the cohesiveness that is so important. They got better the longer they played together."

On Matt Tittle

"I thought Matt had good presence on the field. He went on the field like he was suppose to be there. He and our players both responded well.

Ricky Williams

How he felt after UTEP

"I was pretty sore after 41 carries, but my body is recuperating well. It felt good to get the first game behind us."

On Texas' Ricky Williams

"My dad pointed out to me the other Ricky Williams' performance. He had a good game, but I'm going to give him a run on everything he does."

On going to North Texas

"It's going to be good to go home and play again in front of my family and friends. It will probably be one of our most intense games of the year. They beat us last year in a game we probably should have won. We really expect to have a good game this weekend."

On the offensive line

"We have some inexperience on our offensive line. We have three new players up front. After we got use to each other, we were all right."

Matt Tittle

On coming into the game for Rob Peters

"I wasn't that nervous. After that first series when we didn't get a first down, I came off, got my head together and prepared myself for the next series. As the game went on, I performed better as I became more comfortable out there."

On Preparing for North Texas

"It won't be that different preparing because I get the same number of reps in practice as Rob Peters. I will spend a little more time with the backups quarterbacks in practice and films learning the offense. It will be exciting to return home to play. I want to get out on the practice field and helping the guys getting ready."

On finally getting to play

"It feels real good to play. I've been here a long time and guys have always said to be patient and I'd get my shot. It presented itself Saturday night. I was happy to go in and do the job I did."

"I think I've earned the respect of the players. It was just a matter of me getting a chance to prove that I could lead them to a win. I think they feel comfortable with me out there and we should be all right."

Matt Tittle on if he ever considered transferring from Texas Tech

"I did look into quite a few schools. I was pretty close to wanting leave, but nothing panned out that I was happy with. I wasn't the fact that I was unhappy with Texas Tech, but I wanted to play football. I love the school and the people and I've always had a good time here. I was just looking for a place where I could go in and play football. I have to say now I'm glad I didn't leave. I've got the chance to do the things I wanted to do and I'm happy with where I'm at."
