Raiders Prepare for Texas A&M|
October 20, 1998
Junior Defensive End Taurus Rucker
(On what it will take to have defensive success against A&M offense) "The first thing we are going to have to do is stop Dante Halll because he is probably the best back we have faced the whole season. He can line up at running back and also at receiver. He makes big plays. Their fullback J'Mar Toombs can also make big plays. He had a great game against Nebraska. We know this will be the most physical game that we have played this year. This is the biggest game of the year so far. If we would have gone in a beaten Colorado, we still would have had to win this game to have a chance to win the South Division of the Big 12. If we win this game, we will have a good chance to be in the Big 12 Championship game. If Texas A&M wins, they will be in the driver's seat. Both teams put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform. Whoever comes out on top is going to be there (at the end of the season). We believe we can win the rest of our games. And, I know they believe they can win the rest of their games."
Junior cornerback Oscar Solis
"Colorado was real good. They have a good offense and a good defense. The thing that set them apart from us was their special teams. They have a lot of big-play guys, especially coming off of defense to play special teams. (On his interception in the end zone) The defensive line put a lot of pressure on the quarterback and Chiaverini was running an iside route. I was trying to break under him. I was able to get in front of him and make the interception. (On playing Texas A&M) We've been playing tougher and tougher teams each week. Texas A&M has a really good team. They've got a great defense and a good offense. They are going to try to run the ball on us and every now and then throw for a big play. They are going to keep us on our toes. But, we are going to do everything that we can this week to regroup and go out there and give them a good game. (Texas A&M) has a couple of good receivers in COle and Hodge. They are playmakers."
Junior quarterback Rob Peters
"This is definitely a big week. It is a big rivalry. Everybody gets excited for it. Not only the players, but the fans especially. It's funny when you go to class and everyone wants to talk about it and encourage us to win. This week is a lot of fun. It is definitely a big game. We are excited about it. There is a good atmosphere around here. We have to get better and that is a big challenge for us. We are confident in what we can do and we are confident that we have a good chance to win. (On steak of three-straight Texas Tech win) "I think it makes them take a place a little more attention toward us due to the fact that we have beaten them the last three years. They've all been real close games that could have gone either way. I'm sure it will be a real close game this year. It is going to be a matter of who makes more plays. My hometown is real close, about an hour away, and a lot of my friends go to school there. So, it is definitely a big game for me personally."
Senior receiver Donnie Hart
"This is a big game. It is a chance for the winner to have the inside track to win the South Division. So, it is a big game for both teams. There are a lot of Texas guys on both teams. They have all the Parade All-Americans and we have all the leftovers, I guess. Neither team is going to have any problem getting up for this one. Having won the last three years, we have a lot of confidence that we can beat them. Turnovers are going to be key. If we can take care of the ball and execute our offense, then we are going to have a chance to win."
Junior linebacker Kyle Shipley
"You always want to play well. They have a great linebacker in Dat Nguyen. He gets a lot of pub, a lot of media attention. He deserves it. He is a great player. We have the kind of defense that we feel like can play with anybody in the country. They want to run the ball, they always have. They've got Dante Hall and a lot of great running backs and we will have our sights set on them."
