Williams Named Walker Award Semifinalist|

DALLAS, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore tailback Ricky Williams was named one of eight semifinalists for the 1998 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award, the Southwestern Bell*SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors announced Monday.
Williams, a 5-9, 190-pound Duncanville, Texas native, rushed for 1,582 yards this season and ranked fifth in the nation in rushing yards. His single-season total was the third-best in Texas Tech history and his 2,476 career yards is currently sixth on the school rushing list.
The eight semifinalists for the 1998 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award are:

"Each year the Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award honors the season's most outstanding running back," said Jim L. Turner, chairman of the board of the Dr Pepper Bottling Co. of Texas. "This group of semifinalists embodies Doak Walker's legendary accomplishments both on and off the field. I'm sure that Doak would be as proud of these young men as we are.
Profiles of each of the semifinalists have been forwarded to the 176 members of the 1998 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, comprised of former All-America and All-Pro running backs, TV and print sports journalists and other special sports representatives. The selection committee will complete its voting by Dec. 1. In addition, for the first time this year, fans can also vote at http://www.ESPN.com with the user's choice receiving an official vote in the balloting process.
The winner of the 1998 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award will be announced live on the ESPN2 Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. The award will be presented at the 1998 Dr Pepper Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet at the Dallas Fairmont Hotel on Tues., Jan. 19. Keynote speaker for the event is ESPN's Roy Firestone.
