LUBBOCK, Texas - The Sporting News announced today that Texas Tech freshman Wes Welker (Oklahoma City, Okla.) has been named to the publication's Freshman All-America Team. This is the second postseason award for Welker, who was named to the Rivals.com True Freshman Honorable Mention All-America Team last week.

Welker led the Red Raiders in 2000 with 88.8 all-purpose yards per game. He quickly established himself as the team's top return man early in the season and led Texas Tech in punt and kick return yardage. He amassed 353 punt return yards and 306 kick return yards. Welker finished the season fourth in the Big 12 in punt return yardage and eighth in kick return yardage.

In addition to his special team duties, Welker also contributed offensively. He finished with 72 rushing yards on six carries, including a touchdown run of 42 yards on his first collegiate carry at Kansas. Welker also caught 26 passes for 334 yards, 12.8 yards per reception.
