Red Raiders One of 19 Teams at International Intercollegiate
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech, opening the 1997 spring season, is one of 19 teams competing in the International Intercollegiate golf tournament Thursday through Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico.
Head coach Tommy Wilson's Red Raiders will be one of four Big 12 teams in addition to Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M. Rice and Stephen F. Austin will also be in the field that will compete over the next three days on the par 72, 6,896-yard Club Campestre layout. Tennessee is defending its 1996 title behind defending individual champ Jamie Neher.
The Red Raiders hope to rebound from a disappointing fall season. Tech finished next to last in two tournaments and last in the Harvey Penick Intercollegiate. The best outing was an 11th-place finish at the Red Raider Intercollegiate.
Competing for Texas Tech will be seniors Chris Hill and Patrick Barley, juniors Tom Baldwin and Mark Garcia, and freshman Chris Burns. The tournament will be the first of eight spring events, including the inaugural Big 12 Conference Championship.
