Bills Named to Junior All-America Team

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech men's golfer Gant Bills (Dallas, Texas) has been selected as a Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) in conjunction with Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc. Bills earned honorable mention honors.

Bills, a freshman this year, will travel to the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., for a banquet, held Nov. 24 along with the AJGA's Rolex Junior Classic golf championship Nov. 25-29. A total of 98 junior golfers were named to the 1997 Rolex Junior All-America teams from both boys and girls divisions.

"It's a great honor to receive this award," said Bills. "I'm excited to go to Florida for the banquet and the tournament. I'm also looking forward to playing in more tournaments for Texas Tech."

Bills earned the honor as a result of his strong performance during the past year in junior golf tournaments. He played in several events, including the AJGA Boys Junior Championship in Trophy Club, Texas, and was the tournament champion at the 1997 Texace AJGA San Antonio Shootout. In the AJGA West Texas Junior Championships in Abilene, Texas, Bills finished tied for 18th with a three round total of 214.

"Gant played very well in his first outing with our team," said head coach Tommy Wilson. "We were pleased that he came aboard this year. He,s a hard and dedicated worker both in the classroom and on the golf course. He's definitely going to be an asset to our team and is very deserving of this award."

The AJGA is dedicated to the development of young men and women through competitive junior golf, encompassing more than 3,800 junior golfers. The All-America awards were established in 1978 to recognize players who have distinguished themselves as the world,s premier junior golfers. The individuals are honored based on performances in some 60 national tournaments, 39 of which were conducted by the AJGA.
