Red Raider Golfers Tee Off at New Mexico State Men,s golf team begins two-day tournament Friday
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's golf team travels to New Mexico State for the 1997 Coca-Cola/Herb Wimberly Classic, held Friday and Saturday, October 10-11 at the University Golf Course. The tournament, the Red Raider's second for this fall season, will feature 21 teams competing in three rounds. Each round will include 18 holes on the par 72, 7,040-yard course. Rounds one and two will be held Friday, with shotgun starts beginning at 7:30 a.m. MDT and 1:30 p.m. MDT. Tee times for Saturday,s final round will run from 7:30-8:00 a.m. MDT.
"We,re looking forward to the tournament," said head coach Tommy Wilson. "I feel that it,s a course that,s best-suited for those that are going. We,re taking some young players on this trip, but they,re all playing well at this time and this will give them some good exposure to Division I competition."
Heading to Las Cruces, N.M. for Texas Tech will be freshmen Gant Bills and Matt Loving, sophomore Blake Smith, and veterans Philip Tate and Laird Sparks. Tate led the Red Raider squad at the team,s first outing to the Kansas Invitational, finishing three rounds with a score of 228. Loving, Smith and Sparks will all see action for the first time this year.
Competing along side the Red Raiders will be teams from New Mexico State, Idaho, Washington State, San Diego, Wichita State, Stephen F. Austin State, Long Beach State, Wyoming, Boise State, North Texas, Hardin Simmons, UTEP, Southwest Texas State, Washington, Southern Utah, Minnesota, Oral Roberts, Mississippi, New Mexico and Arizona.
