No. 33 Texas Tech got off to a strong start on its first day of competition in the spring season as the Red Raiders sit in seventh place after round one of the 33rd Annual Ameri Ari in Kona, Hawaii.
The Ameri-Ari, being played on the Kings Course at Waikoloa Beach Resort, features 20 teams in the field and 10 teams with national rankings inside the top 50.
Texas Tech's strong finish on the back nine helped move the Red Raiders into seventh place (4-under, 284) just ahead of No. 15 Stanford, No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 8 USC and No. 48 UC-Davis.
Leading the charge in round one for the Red Raiders was sophomore Clement Sordet, who is currently tied for second place after a 4-under, 68 performance. Sordet is tied with TCU's Eli Cole. The Horned Frogs also boast the tournament leader after round one (Daniel Jennevret) and that has put TCU in the team lead at 11-under, 277.
Texas Tech hits the course for the second round of play at 7:30 a.m. local time in Hawaii. Live results can be tracked at www.golfstat.com.
