Men's Golf Completes Just One Round

Feb. 16, 1998

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. - Despite threatening weather that eventually cancelled the second round of the day, Texas Tech's men's golf team completed the first round at the Bridges All-American Tournament Monday. Held at The Bridges Golf Resort at Casino Magic, the Southern Mississippi tournament saw Georgia State grab the top spot and the Red Raiders finish on the bottom of the 18-team field after day one.

Jaime Acevedo, from Georgia State, shot a new competitive course record in the first round to take the top spot heading into Tuesday's second and final round. For Texas Tech, junior Philip Tate fired a team low 73 on the par 72 course, ending tied for 21st. Tom Baldwin was one stroke back with 74.

The teams safely completed the first round of the day Monday, but had finished only eight holes on the second 18 when heavy rain and lightning forced a halt that eventually led to a cancellation. The tournament will be shortened to 36 holes with the field scheduled for a 7:30 a.m., shotgun start for Tuesday's final round.
