Tech Men's Golf Wins Hyatt Plantation Intercollegiate
March 7, 2006
DORADO, Puerto Rico - For the first time in three seasons, the Texas Tech men's golf team captured its first team title as Tuesday the Red Raiders wrapped up the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate with an 11-stroke victory over Kentucky. The team victory at the event is the first for Texas Tech since the 2002-03 season when it captured the UTSA Invitational.
In addition to the team's success, a pair of Red Raiders earned individual medalist honors at the event. Senior Andrew Dresser claimed the first tournament title of his career with a final-round 68 to match teammate junior Oscar Floren, who nabbed his second individual title in as many tournaments this spring.
Floren also topped the leader board after last month's Mercedes Benz Collegiate.
Freshman golfer Brandon Lakatta notched the first top ten finish of his young career as he tallied a three-round total of 211 at the event to end in a tie for a fifth.
Round out the Red Raiders contingency at the event, freshman Garrett Merrell turned in a 44th place finish with a tournament total of 225, while senior Tyler Symons ended the event in a tie for 48th place with a three-round score of 229.
"It doesn't get any better than this," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "I can't picture any better way to win a tournament. We were focused on winning the team title, but to have two guys end up on top individually is outstanding. We are really excited about the way we are playing right now."
Texas Tech men's golf is back in action on April 3-4 when it travels to Austin, Texas, to take part in the Morris Williams Invitational.
