TRINITY, Texas - Strong play from freshmen Matias Dominguez and Clement Sordet paced No. 46 Texas Tech to a third place standing after the first two rounds of the 2012 Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championships at Whispering Pines Golf Club.

Texas Tech led the tournament for most of the day but a late surge by No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 28 Oklahoma pushed the Red Raiders back from the lead at 12-over, 588.

"Overall we feel really good," said Texas Tech Head Coach Greg Sands. "There is obviously a lot of woulda-coulda-shouldas out there but I am really proud of the guys especially the way we started and the way we battled back after losing a little bit coming in the first round. I am really pleased with where we are at. You can't win it on the first day but you can certainly lose it. We are right in the thick of things and that's a testimony to these guys."

Dominguez, a freshman from Santiago, Chile, turned in two of his better rounds of the season and currently sits in a two-way tie for third place at 1-under, 143. He turned in a first round score of 3-under, 69 and began the second round as the tournament leader.

"He played solid all day," said Sands. "I am really proud of the way he is playing and how he is striking the ball. He is going to be there in the end I think."

Texas A&M moved into the lead late in the second round as the Aggies compiled a 2-under, 286 to overcome the Red Raiders. No. 28 Oklahoma also had a strong second round as the Sooners shot 4-over par to take a four-stroke lead over the Red Raiders.

Top-ranked Texas, stands in fourth place at 18-over, 594 and will be paired with Texas Tech in Saturday's third round.

"We are coming out early and we will be paired with Texas and I think that's a favorable pairing to play with the No. 1 ranked team in the country," noted Sands. "A lot of times when your group is doing well it tends to propel you along so I like that. Going early should help us with good green conditions and hopefully little to no wind."

Sordet, Tech's team leader in stroke average, will head into Saturday in a tie for sixth place at 1-over, 145. Sordet has posted back-to-back top five finishes dating back to the Wyoming Cowboy Classic and last week's Aggie Invitational.

Texas Tech's lone upperclassman in this event, Finley Ewing IV, is currently tied for 17th at 6-over, 150.

The Red Raiders will tee off at 8:18 a.m. on Saturday morning for the third round of the Big 12 Championship. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
