TRINITY, Texas - Led by four freshmen and one junior, Texas Tech finished in third place at the 2012 Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club.

Tech's third-place finish matches the highest in school history at this event as the Red Raiders finished third in both 2007 and 2008. No. 15 Texas A&M edged out top-ranked Texas for the team championship while No. 28 Oklahoma finished fourth, No. 32 Baylor ended in fifth and No. 30 Oklahoma State wrapped up in sixth.

"We are just trying to digest everything right now but we feel like we played really well the first three rounds," said Texas Tech Head Coach Greg Sands. "It was tough today but all and all third place is good with these young guys. It gets them experience and we had some good finishers with Clement (Sordet) and Matias (Dominguez) and Finley (Ewing IV) almost jumping in the Top 10. This is definitely something to build on."

Scores all across the board were high in the final round, including a 17-over shot by the Red Raiders. Texas posted the lowest round of the day at 3-over but it was not enough to overtake Texas A&M, who entered the day with a nine-stroke lead.

Texas Tech ended the tournament at 31-over, 1,183 and was 15 strokes back of Texas and 18 behind Texas A&M. The Aggies won the championship at 13-over, 1,169.

"Hopefully we can carry some momentum into the regionals," noted Sands. "We have to stay positive and take the things that we can learn from this week and get better on and bring those into the regionals. It's great to get some experience on this golf course because we know we will be back in two years with a lot of the same faces and hopefully we can maximize that and win a championship in two years."

A pair of Tech freshmen earned All-Big 12 honors as they notched Top 10 finishes . Clement Sordet, a native of Charbonnieres, France, placed seventh overall at 7-over, 295. For Sordet, it was his third consecutive Top 10 finish and his sixth overall this season. Matias Dominguez, a native of Santiago, Chile, finished 10th after posting a 7-over, 295 and that marked his second Top 10 finish of the year.

Right behind Dominguez and just barely missing the All-Big 12 mark was junior Finley Ewing IV. Ewing ended the four-round tournament tied for 11th at 8-over, 296.

Texas Tech will now wait to learn its NCAA Regionals destination as the men's golf program is assured of its 11th consecutive NCAA invitation. The 11-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament mark the longest active streak on campus. The NCAA Selection Show is set for May 7 at 8 p.m. (CT) on NCAA.com.
