HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Texas Tech University men's golf team fired a 309 in Tuesday's final round to finish 11th at the 1998 Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championships on Prairie Dunes Country Club. Oklahoma State repeated as the team champion, shooting a tournament low total of 291 in the third round. Hunter Haas of Oklahoma earned individual medalist honors on the par 70, 6,593-yard layout.

Haas carded a 71 in the final round to finish at 218, just one stroke ahead of Texas' Brad Elder, and two strokes on top of Charles Howell from Oklahoma State. Howell was the only golfer of the tournament to finish a round even par, improving from rounds of 74 and 76 on the first day. Texas Tech freshman Gant Bills improved to 76 on the final day to end tied at 22nd and on top of the Red Raider pack with a 23-over 233. Junior Philip Tate, who lead Tech after the first day, shot rounds of 80, 76 and 79 to finish tied for 27th, while senior Tom Baldwin was just one stroke back at 236 to end tied for 32nd. Rounding out the remaining two scoring spots were senior Mark Garcia at t48th and freshman Matt Loving at 52nd. The Red Raiders ended with a 947 at the Baylor-hosted event, dropping to 11th from 8th on the first day of competition. The Cowboys totaled 898 on the tournament, seven strokes ahead of second place Texas. Colorado moved up from fourth to claim third place.

Last year, Tech placed 12th overall at the inaugural championships. Tate was the top Red Raider at tied for 29th, thus improving two slots this year. The tournament concludes the team's season.
