LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior golfer Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) fired a final round 68 to claim a share of the individual title at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., Sunday. The junior began the day in seventh place and five shots off the lead as Floren closed the gap immediately with four birdies on his first nine holes.

The win is the first of Floren's career, topping last season's second-place finish at the UTSA Intercollegiate in February. Teeing off the round from the No. 10 tee, Floren carded birdies on four holes through nine, before leveling off with a birdie and bogey on the back. His round of 68 tied as low round for the day with two players from team champion Tennessee. Floren was 6-under for the tournament and shared his title with Tennessee's Darren Renwick.

Senior Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) began the day in an 11th-place tie and remained there after shooting a 1-under 71 and finishing the 54-hole tournament at 1-under overall. Junior Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) tied in 33rd place after carding a 75 and sophomore Brian Scherer (Midland, Texas) tied for 50th with a 77 in the final round. Sophomore Tyler Weworski (Carlsbad, Calif.) improved on a pair of 82s with a 76 Sunday.

Overall, the Red Raiders finished eighth in the 12-team field. Tennessee turned in the round of the tournament with a 14-under 274 to run away from the field Sunday and claim a 12-stroke lead over second round leader Chattanooga, which finished second. Georgia Tech (+3) was third, Auburn (+6) fourth and South Carolina (+8) fifth. Alabama (+11) and Wake Forest (+11) tied in sixth place, followed by the Red Raiders (+12) in eighth and Clemson (+20) in ninth. East Tennessee State (+28) and Georgia (+28) tied for 10th, while Mississippi (+35) finished 12th.

 

 

The Red Raiders continue their season at the Gary Koch Invitational in Tampa, Fla., Oct. 3-4.
