LUBBOCK, Texas - Will Griffin bounced back from an opening-round 74 with a 4-under 68 in the second to jump from 14th to 2nd place after two rounds of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala., Monday. The Texas Tech junior was co-medalist at the event last season, leading Texas Tech to the team title.

The Red Raiders got off to a rough start in the quest to defend their title, carding a disappointing 306 in the opening round, placing 10th in the 12-team field. Behind the play of Griffin and senior Garrett Merrell, Tech rose four places in the standings to a sixth-place tie with a 2-over 288, but trail tournament-leader Baylor by 15 strokes. Merrell, tied in 12th place, fired a 2-under 70 in the second round, after opening the day with a 77.

Santiago Rivas carded rounds of 75-76 and is tied in 25th place, while Sergio Franky (80-76) and Chris Ward (80-79) are tied in 49th and 56th place, respectively. UAB's Zack Sucher leads the tournament by one stroke over Griffin, whose 68 was the low round on the first day of the tournament.

Baylor leads the field at 5-over 581, while second-ranked LSU (+13) and No. 20 Mississippi (+16) are second and third. No. 24 UAB (+19) and Tulsa (+19) are tied in fourth place, while the No. 19 Red Raiders (+20), East Tennessee State (+20) and North Florida (+20) are a shot back in a sixth-place tie. No. 25 Auburn (+26) fell five spots to a tie for ninth with Georgia Southern (+26). No. 21 Wake Forest (+28) and Oklahoma (+41) are 11th and 12th.
