Rain Shortens Men's Golf Tournament
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team finished in 15th place after just two rounds at the Crown Classic, hosted by Stephen F. Austin. Today's third and final round was washed out due to wet weather, leaving Kansas on top, after Friday's two-round total of 578, to claim the tournament title.
The Red Raider unit shot 307 and 310 in the two rounds respectively, ending 41 over at the par 72, 6674-yard Crown Colony Country Club. Senior Tom Baldwin led team, ending tied for 36th in the group of 78 individuals. Baldwin shot 79 and 73 to finish eight over, leaving him on top of the squad for the second consecutive tournament. Freshman Gant Bills was close behind, finishing in a three-way tie for 45th with a two-round score of 153.
Freshman Matt Loving returns with his best finish this Fall, shooting 74 and 81 to tie for 57th. Junior Philip Tate (157) finished tied for 68th, and junior Ronny Gailey (162) finished tied for 73rd in his Fall debut with the team.
Kansas was named tournament champion at the rain-shortened event, shooting just two over par to lead the 15-team field. Jayhawk golfer Chris Thompson knocked in the tournament low of 141 (71, 70) to finish three under par and claim the individual championship. The Crown Classic wrapped up the Tech men's golf Fall schedule. The team will break from action until beginning the Spring Schedule on February 5, 1998 with the 26th International Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Monterrey, Mexico.
