Men's Golf Finishes Deep South Intercollegiate
Texas Tech squad ends in 18th place
LAUREL, Miss. - The Texas Tech men's golf team completed tournament play today at the Deep South Intercollegiate in Laurel, Mississippi, finishing 18th. Southeastern Louisiana claimed the team championship with a score of 897 at the Laurel Country Club event, hosted by Southern Mississippi.
The Red Raiders ended in 18th place on both days of the 54-hole tournament. The Tech unit finished with a three-round score of 952 on the par 72, 6,693 course. Junior Philip Tate shot the low score for the squad, totaling 233 on the tournament to tie for 48th place. Senior Tom Baldwin (236) finished tied for 63rd and freshman Matt Loving (239) completed the tournament tied for 78th.
In the 93-player, 18-team field, Ben Zeiky, from Tulane, captured individual medalist honors after shooting a 70 in the third round to end at one over par. Greg Howell, from Southern Miss, finished with an identical score of 217, but was edged out after Zeiky's par three on the second playoff hole. Howell helped tournament host Southern Miss to a second place finish with a score of 898. The Texas Tech men,s golf team will compete in its final tournament on the fall schedule Nov. 14-15 when the unit travels to Lufkin, Texas for the Crown Classic.
