Texas Tech Heads To PGA West Tournament|
Feb. 16, 2014
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech men's golf team heads to the West Coast on Monday for The Prestige at PGA West after a successful first tournament in Hawaii to begin the spring schedule.
The first round begins Monday morning and will continue through Wednesday.
No. 42 Tech is one of five teams in this week's tournament that qualified for the NCAA Championship this past season. The Red Raiders will go up against No. 11 Stanford, No. 17 Washington, No. 22 USC, No. 23 UCLA, No. 31 Arizona State, No. 33 LSU, No. 45 Oregon, No. 51 San Diego State, No. 68 UC Davis, No. 124 Pepperdine and Stirling.
One thing Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said he would like to see different is for his players to finish strong this week.
"The guys played really well," Sands said. "We were disappointed that we didn't finish a little bit better the last day and move up but it was really close. One shot separated a lot of very good golf teams. So that's motivating for us to know the importance of a shot and to get better and be on the right side of that bubble next time."
The Red Raiders finished the Amer Ari Invitational at 26-under par (838) - just three shots shy of a tie for third.
Henry Todd emerged as the low scorer for Tech in Kona. The junior finished strong with a 5-under par 67 for a three-day total of 207 and tied for 16th individually.
"Henry played well," Sands said. "He hit the ball really well and also putted really well. So we're looking for him to continue that streak and I expect him to do well."
Three others from last year's NCAA Championship team -- Esteban Restrepo, Clement Sordet and Matias Dominguez -- will join Todd along with freshman Corbin Kasten. Freshman Hannes Ronneblad will also make the trip as an individual player.
