Texas Tech Top-Ranked Team Entering Tournament|
Feb. 17, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech dropped only one spot to No. 17 in the Golfweek collegiate rankings following its spring opener in Hawaii nearly two weeks ago and enters this week's UTSA Invitational as the top-ranked team in the 16-team field. The 54-hole event opens with 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.
Tech will take the same lineup it used earlier this month in Hawaii into this week's tournament. Sophomore and San Antonio native Will Griffin returns to his home course at Oak Hills, where he honed his game at a young age. Junior Garrett Merrell led the Red Raiders in Hawaii with a top ten finish and posted sub-par rounds of 64 and 68 in the final two to climb into the top ten. Mid-year transfer Chris Ward from Oklahoma State tied in 13th place in his first event as a Red Raider, while Griffin tied with junior Santiago Rivas in 39th place. Freshman Sergio Franky rounds out the lineup.
No. 25 Mississippi State, No. 33 Wichita State and No. 58 Oklahoma are also among the top 100 teams participating in the event, which include Air Force, Central Arkansas, DePaul, Illinois State, Louisiana-Monroe, Marshall, McNeese State, Rhode Island, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, host Texas-San Antonio and Texas State.
The Red Raiders opened the spring a little over a week ago at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate, which boasted a field that included three top 10 teams. Tech finished fifth, just five shots back of then-No. 4 Georgia Tech.
