LUBBOCK, Texas -
Senior Chris Ward picked up the first Big 12 Player of the Month honor of his career as announced this afternoon by league officials.
Ward, a senior from McKinney, turned in the best performance of his career in the second round of the 2010 Big 12 Conference Championship (April 23-25) en route to his first Big 12 title and first top finish of the season. He shot a career-best and team-low 65 in the second round, including seven birdies (14 for the tournament) of the tournament to complement a first-round score of 69, which included one eagle and three birdies, to place him at the top of the leaderboard as he claimed his first individual conference title, finishing 9-under par at the end of the final round. With the top honor, Ward became the first Tech golfer since 1996 to take home the conference individual championship. For his efforts, he was named to Golfweek.com's College Player of the Week following the conference championship as well as earning All-Big 12 honors for the second time in his career.
Leading up to the conference championship, Ward led the team in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate Tournament (April 5-6) with a fourth-place finish after finishing just 5-over par in three rounds.
Ward and the No. 10 Red Raiders await the NCAA Championship selection day, May 10, to determine their postseason destination. NCAA regional play begins May 20-22.
