Men's Golf Secures 13th Consecutive NCAA Bid

May 5, 2014

Raleigh Regional Central

The Texas Tech Men's Golf team has secured its 13th consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and will head to Raleigh, North Carolina for the regional round being held May 15-17 at Lonnie Poole Golf Club.

Now with 13 consecutive NCAA trips, the Red Raiders continue to hold the longest active postseason streak on campus and the second longest in school history. The women's basketball team made 16 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1990-2005.

"It's really a testimony to the guys hard work," Head Coach Greg Sands stated following the announcement. "We put in a lot of hard work this year. And the guys in the past - to make 13-straight Regionals is nice, but we want more. We want to go to the NCAA Championships, get in the Top 8 and compete for a National Championship is our goal."

Texas Tech will be the No. 7 seed in the Raleigh Regional (hosted by NC State) and is one of seven teams from the Big 12 Conference in this year's field of 64. Georgia Tech is the top seed in the Raleigh Regional followed in order by Washington, Florida State, Texas A&M, Mercer, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, South Alabama, Memphis, Minnesota, Rice and Bethune-Cookman.

"I think that when they're looking down the field, they aren't going to find a hotter 7-seed than us, and that's a testimony again to how well we're playing right now," Sands noted. "There's some great teams: Georgia Tech is a phenomenal team, they've been playing really well lately. Texas A&M has been struggling a little bit so that may help us in the middle of those seeds. I think we've got a pretty good draw. I'm excited to go to North Carolina - it's a great state for golf and we should have some good weather and the best teams will advance."

The top five teams from the Raleigh Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships conducted May 23-18 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Texas Tech finished tied for 14th at last year's NCAA Championships in Atlanta.

The Red Raiders are led by junior Clement Sordet who owns a 73.2 stroke average through 33 rounds of golf. Sordet has played in all 11 tournaments of the season and recently earned Big 12 Conference All-Tournament team honors with a tie for seventh place at the Big 12 Championships at Whispering Pines.
