Jeff Mitchell To Be Named Texas Tech Director of Golf
May 12, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University is expected to name former Red Raider golf letterwinner and current Head Women's Coach Jeff Mitchell to the newly created position of Director of Golf, pending administrative approval.
Mitchell, Texas Tech's women's golf coach since 1990-91, will oversee both the Red Raider men's and women's golf programs in his new position. He will be aided by a full-time assistant coach who will have duties associated with both teams. Mitchell's staff will also include a graduate assistant coach.
"I see this as a big challenge as well as a great opportunity," Mitchell said. "I have a very large investment in Texas Tech athletics. I am really looking forward to getting us moving in the right direction."
A native of Llano, Texas, Mitchell played in every tournament for the Red Raiders from 1974 to 1976. The former All-Southwest Conference and honorable mention All-America selection finished second in the 1976 SWC Tournament.
Under Mitchell's guidance as head women's coach, Texas Tech has won 10 tournament titles and has been represented in NCAA West Regional action for six consecutive years. The Red Raiders have advanced to the West Regional as a team five times in the past six seasons. The program made its first appearance in the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in 1996.
Mitchell was twice named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year. He has also earned District and Regional Coach of the Year honors from the National Golf Coaches Association of America.
"We have the best possible candidate for this position in Jeff Mitchell," Myers said. "He has been outstanding in guiding our women's program. I look forward to him doing a similar job leading the men's team."
The 1989 Texas Tech graduate played on the PGA Tour from 1977 through 1984, earning 12 top-10 finishes. He won the 1980 Phoenix Open and is also a former Texas State Open champion.
