NCAA Greensboro Regional In Sight For Texas Tech Men's Golf|
Texas Tech opens up NCAA Regional play in Greensboro, N.C., on Thursday.
Texas Tech's quest for a berth in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships begins this week in Greensboro, N.C. as the Red Raiders open play in the NCAA Greensboro Regional at Grandover Resort.
The Greensboro Regional is one of six regionals across the nation and each will send its top five teams to the NCAA Championships at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., May 29-June 3. The additional regionals will be held simultaneously across the nation in Athens, Ga. (University of Georgia Golf Course), Ann Arbor, Mich. (University of Michigan Golf Course), Bowling Green, Ky. (The Club at Olde Stone), Norman, Okla. (Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club) and Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course).
"We are really excited to be back in the NCAA Regionals," said Sands. "I think this is a favorable draw for us because we are familiar with several of the teams and the course is similar to Whispering Pines where the Big 12 was held."
Texas Tech is heading to the East Coast for the first time in NCAA Regional play since going to the Orlando Regional in 2006. That trip east was a productive one for the Red Raiders as they finished third and advanced to the NCAA Championships held in Sunriver, Ore. For Texas Tech, this marks the 11th consecutive trip to NCAA Regional play and that is the longest active streak for any team on the Tech campus.
A total of 14 teams comprise the Greensboro Regional with No. 8 seed Texas Tech being the lone Big 12 participant. The top seed in Greensboro will be Auburn followed by No. 2 UNLV, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Liberty, No. 7 SMU and No. 8 Texas Tech. Rounding out the field from seeds 9-14 are Tulsa, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, Charlotte, George Washington and Mount St. Mary's, respectively.
The Grandover Resort - East Course (7,300 yards, Par 72) will serve as the tournament home and was designed by David Graham and Gary Pranks.
Texas Tech's roster card will mirror that of the Big 12 Championships as head coach Greg Sands will take four freshmen and a junior. Freshmen Clement Sordet, Matias Dominguez, Esteban Restrepo and Henry Todd will join junior Finley Ewing IV on the trip to North Carolina. Sordet and Dominguez are coming off strong finishes at the Big 12 Championships as Sordet finished seventh and Dominguez 10th. The Top 10 finishes garnered both players All-Big 12 Tournament honors.
Sordet is the team leader with a 72.7 stroke average and has logged a team-high six top 10 finishes this season.
Texas Tech will begin teeing off at 7:50 a.m. CT on Thursday and will be paired with SMU and Tulsa. Live scoring of the NCAA Greensboro Regional can be found on golfstat.com. TexasTech.com will be on site for the three-day tournament and will be providing comprehensive daily coverage.
