Four Tech Golfers Named to Division I PING All-Region Team|

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Golf Coaches Association of America has announced the Division I PING All-Region teams, recognizing collegiate golfers for their outstanding season play. Texas Tech men's golfers Garrett Merrell, Chris Ward, Will Griffin and Santiago Rivas were honored among the 15 players on the South Central team. Tech tied with Texas A&M for the most selections in the region.
Merrell, a junior, finished the 2007-2008 campaign with a 73.06 stroke average and a third-place showing at the Big 12 Championships. He, along with teammate Ward, was named to the 2008 All-Big 12 Men's Golf Team and finished in the top-20 in six events. Added to the roster midyear, Ward competed in five events during the spring season and culminated it with a fourth-place showing at the Big 12 Championships. The sophomore transfer from Oklahoma State also led the team with a stroke average of 72.63 for the year.
Griffin, a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, won the title at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate and was the Big 12's golfer of the month for October. Ranked No. 59 nationally in birdies, he led the team with 117 on the year. Rivas, a junior, tied for eleventh at the Big 12 Championships and was a consistent competitor all year for Tech as evidence by his five top-20 finishes.
PING All-Region teams consist of the top 15 individuals in their region in the Individual Ranking System. Additionally, any player ranked in the top 75 according to Golfstat or the Sagarin rankings not included in their region's top 15 are added to their All-Region team. Members of the PING All-Region teams are eligible for PING All-America honors.
