The No. 22 Texas Tech men's golf team will look to build upon a sixth place finish in its opening tournament of the fall season as the Red Raiders will compete for the first time in program history in the coveted PING/Golfweek Preview this weekend at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The PING/Golfweek Preview, known for its talent and prestige, will boast a talented 15-team field featuring 13 teams from the 2010 NCAA Championships including reigning champion Augusta State, runner-up Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, UCLA, UNLV, and Virginia.
The Red Raiders opened up the 2010 season with a sixth place finish in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in Georgia two weeks ago. Senior Matt Smith claimed Tech's first top-10 finish of the season as he led the Red Raiders with a two-under-par 214 for the three-day event. Fellow senior Nils Floren followed close behind in 12th place after turning in three consecutive even-par rounds for the Classic.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys return to the Preview as the two-time defending PING/Golfweek Preview champions led by junior Peter Uihlein, the 2009 PING Preview individual champion and 2010 NCAA individual medalist. The University of Washington came in second while Arizona State followed in third place by five strokes.
The Karsten Creek Golf Club, the host for this weekend's Preview, will also serve as the site for the 2011 NCAA Championships.
The three-day, 54-hole event will get underway Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. the first two days of competition and will conclude with the final round beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning with an 18-hole round being played each day.
