Oct. 2, 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 18 Texas Tech men's golf team received another honor Tuesday morning, as it was named the College Men's Team of the Week by Golfweek for its showing at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
The Red Raiders took home first-place honors at the event after firing a nine-over 873 to pick up the win. Tech finished five shots ahead of second-place UAB and seven strokes in front of No. 6 Auburn, who finished in third. It was the Red Raiders' first event win since March 2006, when they won the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Will Griffin led Tech with a three-under 213 to tie for first place and pick up the first event win and medal of his career. The San Antonio, Texas, native began the final round at Shoal Creek in third place. After shooting a two-under 70 and birdying the final hole, however, he found himself at the top of the leaderboard.
Griffin was not the only Red Raider who showed well on the prestigious course last week. Sophomore Matt Smith and freshman Sergio Franky each shot a four-over 220 to tie for 10th place and mark the first event since 2006 that three Tech golfers have finished in the top 10. Franky also tied for the lowest round score of the event with a 68 in the second round.
Tech has now completed two of its five fall events. It will next be in action on Oct. 8-9 at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
