Texas Tech Athletics Communications sat down with men's golf coach Greg Sands to discuss his 2011 team, their youth, and what Sands expects from the remainder of the 2011 campaign. The Red Raiders completed the Jack Nicklaus Invitational with a 12th place finish on Tuesday and now will now shift their focus to the Isleworth Collegiate Tournament in Windermere, Fla. which is slated for Oct. 23.
Texas Tech Athletics Communications: The men's golf team has five true freshmen and only one senior on the roster this year. How do you feel about having such a young team this year?
Greg Sands: Well Tyler Weworski, our only senior is redshirting this year, so we are playing with no seniors. I was a little worried at first, but Clement Sordet won the first tournament. I'm sure we will hit some bumps in the road along the way, but the golf ball doesn't know how old you are when you hit it.
Do you feel that the team is maturing quickly as the season progresses?
How have your upperclassmen helped in mentoring such a young team?
Tyler Weworski, our only senior has done a really good job of that. He can really light up a room, and is easily a friend to these freshmen. We have three guys who are international, and he has really welcomed them in.
What do you like most about this year's team?
These guys are very excited, very hungry, and excited about playing college golf. Everyone is excited about the schedule. I love that these guys are really good about listening and learning as well.
What are your goals and expectations for this year's team?
It's hard to say, but we'd like to finish in the top-eight nationally, which we did last year. So that is the bar that has been set and we won't let age determine our goals.
