Texas Tech University Director of Golf Jeff Mitchell announced today that Mark Hull and Trey Pyka, both from San Antonio Churchill High School, have signed national letters of intent with the Red Raiders.

"I could not be more excited about my first men's class," said Mitchell, who is coaching both the men's and women's programs in his first season as director of golf. "These two young men are a great start to what is going to be a fun trip to national prominence. Along with some returning players now on the team, it is going to be an enjoyable experience."

Hull, who originally lived in Virginia before moving to San Antonio, was the San Antonio Express-News Golfer of the Year for 1998. He also was named second-team all-state last year. In Virginia as a sophomore, Hull was named all-region and was selected to The Washington Post all-metro squad.

"Mark is a well-rounded golfer," Mitchell said. "He has length, touch and a good golf sense. I look for him to really blossom at Tech. He is also a very responsible student. I really like that combination. He will contribute early to the program."

Pyka became the youngest player to win the Greater San Antonio Junior title when he claimed the championship in 1996. The second-team 1998 all-state selection reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

"Trey is tremendously resilient," Mitchell said. "He shot 79, 67 to twin the Tiger Classic in College Station. "He shows a lot of heart and a lot of game. He has been a member of the National Honor Society as well as being a good athlete."
