Texas Tech Tennis Opens Spring Season

Women Face 5th-Ranked Texas Friday in Athletic Training Center

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's tennis teams both open the 1997 spring season this weekend, while the women's team plays the first-ever Big 12 Conference match against the fifth-ranked University of Texas Lady Longhorns Friday at 6 p.m. in the Athletic Training Center.

On Saturday, the men's and women's team will be in action. The 40th-ranked Red Raider men's squad takes on Tyler Junior College at 3:30 at Lubbock Country Club, while the women play their second match in two days against Tyler JC at 1:30 p.m. in the Athletic Training Center.

"We have a number of new players on the men's side and the team is anxious to get out on the court and start competing," said Siegel. "Everyone is excited about the new season and we are ready to get going.

"The women will have a tough task against the fifth-ranked team in the country and, easily, the best team in the Big 12. But, if our women go out and stay in each match and keep competing, there is always a chance for an upset. We can't press things and try to make the big shots."

Siegel is beginning his fourth season as head coach of the men's team and first as the Director of Tennis and head women's tennis coach. The Texas Tech women return an experienced squad that enjoyed a good spring season.

The men's team is starting the season with several newcomers that have international experience, as well as Petar Danolic, who is rated one of the top sophomores in the country.
