Feb. 9, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - Putting the cap on their first of four road trips, the Texas Tech men's tennis team won 5-2 over No. 75 UNLV and No. 73 San Diego this weekend in Las Vegas. The Red Raiders next face TCU and Arkansas-Little Rock beginning Feb. 16 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Taking on host UNLV on Friday, Tech jumped to an early lead by sweeping doubles. No. 11-ranked Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic won the doubles point over the Rebel's David Campbell and Luca Barlocchi, 8-4. In singles, Markovic and Christian Rojmar won in straight sets at No. 2 and 5, respectively, boosting Tech to a 3-0 lead. Tech's No. 1 player Bojan Szumanski dropped a second set tiebreaker, 7-5, losing to Elliot Wronski 6-4, 7-6. Shortly after, sophomore Breler defeated Andrew Giussrida in three sets to secure the team victory.
In day two of competition, Tech faced its second ranked opponent in No. 73 San Diego. Tech's doubles did it again as this time the No. 10 duo of Rojmar and Szumanski squeezed passed the Toreros' Chris Coetzee and Thomas Liversage, 9-8, clinching the doubles point for Tech the second time this season. San Diego quickly retaliated as Dean Jackson gave Markovic his first singles loss winning in straight sets at No. 2.
Rojmar continued his domination at No. 5, winning in straight sets over Tamer Antabi 6-2, 6-2. Szumanski redeemed himself at No. 1 by taking down Liversage, 6-1, 6-4. It was Tech's No. 6 player Breler who overpowered Nils Schive for the win in three sets, clinching the team victory for the second straight match. Rounding out the day, senior Lenoir Ramos took Coetzee to three sets before walking away with the win, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"It was a great weekend as we played two very good teams," commented head coach Tim Siegel. "UNLV and San Diego really gave us a good test, and our guys responded very well to challenge. I was very pleased with the play of the bottom half of our lineup, as this weekend they were huge for us."
