Texas Tech Men's Tennis Defeats New Mexico State

Feb. 8, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated New Mexico State Sunday at the Athletic Training Center. The Red Raiders moved to 3-1 on the season with a 4-3 victory over the Aggies. "I couldn't be more proud of the way our guys played today," said head coach Tim Siegel. "It was a tremendous effort by everyone, and that's what we shoot for, a team effort every time.

"It was especially big this early in the season, to win at home and beat a ranked team," Siegel said. "And, it doesn't get any easier than this. We turn around and leave Tuesday to play Arkansas. But, they proved today that hard work and effort will win the matches." In singles competition, senior Tylir Jimenez, and sophomores Ryan Shupe, Adam Baranowski and Carey Biorkman recorded wins. Jimenez came from behind to win his first match and dominated in the third to top New Mexico State's Jason Noble 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

The Aggies claimed two victories in doubles play to take home the point, finishing with three points on the match. The Red Raiders will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas this week to play the University of Arkansas, Siegel's alma mater, on Tuesday, February 10th. On Wednesday the team moves on to play Arkansas - Little Rock.
