No. 33 Red Raiders Dominate No. 54 VCU

LUBBOCK, Texas - In its first match of the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, the No. 33 Texas Tech men's tennis team dominated No. 54 Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0, on Thursday morning in Montgomery, Ala.
Tech (9-5) started of the match by claiming the doubles point as it won at the No. 2 and 3 spots against the Rams (10-5). Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic teamed up at No. 2 to beat VCU's Thibaut Charron and Bobo Delemark, 8-6, while David Gonzalez and Gonzalo Escobar defeated Martin Schulhauser and Nicolas Vinel, 8-3, at No. 3. The Red Raiders' No. 1 duo of Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar did not finish their match since Tech clinched the doubles point.
In singles action, Tech grabbed wins at No. 1, 3 and 4, to get the victory over the VCU. At the No. 1 spot, 48th-ranked Carvalho was victorious over Charron, 6-1, 6-3, and Rojmar beat Benjamin Bouhana, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. Escobar also won 6-2, 6-2, over Vinel at No. 4.
"We came out strong in doubles to set the tone," said head coach Tim Siegel. "I was pleased with the way we competed and the way we got after them at the start of singles."
Tech now faces No. 4 Tennessee on Fri., March 20, at 1:30 p.m., in the second round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
"We are looking forward to playing Tennessee tomorrow," Siegel stated. "They are very well coached and are one of the five best teams in the country. This is a great opportunity for us."
