Tech Men's Tennis Team Suffered Defeat To No. 29 University of San Diego, 4-3

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Texas Tech men's tennis team suffered defeat today to No. 29 University of San Diego. The Red Raiders are now 13-4 for the season and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders will continue conference play next week as they take on Texas A&M and Texas. In singles, senior Devin Wakeford was able to grasp a victory against Nic Beuque at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 7-6. Another win came from senior John Walker at the No. 5 position against Mirza Koristovic, 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 1 slot, senior Alfonso Perez was not able to overcome Pierrick Ysern, as he fell, 6-3, 6-3. Playing the No. 2 spot, sophomore Esat Tanik fell to Jason Pongsrikul, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Michael Innerebner suffered defeat to Rob Blair at the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 6 slot, sophomore Jonathan John fell to Michael Mshede, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. "This was a great team effort, losing 4-3 to a top 30 team in the nation," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We did it all without our No. 1 player, it was a great effort from the team. This team has a lot of heart and I am proud of them." For doubles, the duo of Perez and Tanik filled the No. 1 spot as they were triumphant over Pongsrikul and Beuque, 8-3. Playing at No. 3, Walker and John were able to edge Koristovic and Meschede, 8-5. For the No. 2 duo, Wakeford and Innerebner fell to Blair and Ysern, 8-3. Up next for the Red Raiders will be Oklahoma State on April 12 and Abilene Christian on April 15, both matches at home.
