Men's Tennis Team Falls To No. 11 Texas A&M In First Round Of Big 12 Tournament, 4-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The No. 5 seed Texas Tech men's tennis team wrapped up their season today as they fell today to No. 11 Texas A&M, the No. 4 seed, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, 4-0. The Red Raiders finished their season with a record of 13-8 for the season and 3-4 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders stand at No. 58 in the national rankings. In singles action, sophomore Esat Tanik fell to Lester Cook at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-3. For the No. 3 spot, sophomore Michael Innerebner lost toAnte Matijevic, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, sophomore Jonathan John suffered defeat to John Nallon, 6-1, 6-4. At the No. 1 spot, Ryan Newport was over senior Alfonso Perez, 7-6, 1-1, when the match ended. In the No. 4 position, Khaled El Dorry was over John Walker, 6-4, 2-2, as the match ended. Freshman Casper Steenkamp was behind Matt Loucks at the No. 5 slot, 7-5, 2-2, as the match ended. "I thought we played very well in doubles," said head coach Tim Siegel. "I thought our energy was great, we battled against a top ranked team. The matches that were still going on, we were still very close." Playing at the No. 1 doubles, the duo of Perez and Tanik defeated Matijevic and Cook, 8-6. The duo of Innerebner and Walker suffered defeat to El Dorry and Newport at the No. 2 position, 8-6. Nallon and Loucks defeated John and Steenkamp at the No. 3 spot, 8-3.
