No. 15 Texas Tech Falls to No. 3 Texas in Big 12 Semifinals

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 15 Texas Tech men's tennis team suffered just its fifth loss of the season at the hands of third-ranked Texas, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas (24-2) jumped out to take a 1-0 lead as it won the doubles point by winning matches at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively, over Tech (21-5). At No. 2, 33rd-ranked Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico beat Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile, 8-5, while the sixth-ranked duo in the country of Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala defeated Tech's 17th-ranked tandem of Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia, 8-3.
The Longhorns continued to dominate by getting wins in straight sets at No. 4, 5 and 6 to win the match. Jean Andersen downed Stabile, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, while No. 95 Zavala dropped Vitor Manzini, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Texas' final victory came at No. 6 as Vasko Mladenov defeated Raphael Pfister, 6-1, 7-5.
"Texas played great doubles today to get them off to a good start," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We played competitive tennis at No. 1, 2 and 3. Gonzalo (Escobar) was close to winning his match. At No. 5 and 6, we had chances to win in the second set in both of them. I was proud of the way we played and I wish Texas the best of luck tomorrow."
The Red Raiders now await the announcement of the NCAA Championships, which will be televised on ESPNews on Tues., May 4, from 4-5 p.m. CDT.
