Las Cruces, N.M.- The Texas Tech men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition at the New Mexico State Tournament. The Red Raiders were led by seniors Alfonso Perez and John Walker, who went 2-0 in singles play and the duo of freshman Diederik de Groot and senior Devin Wakeford, who went 2-0 in doubles play.

In the A singles bracket, Wakeford defeated Bart Scott of New Mexico, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Wakeford then lost to Divan Coetzee of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-0. Also in the A bracket was de Groot, who finished 1-1 as he lost to Mark Roberts of New Mexico State, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 and then defeated Ben Archer-Clowes of NMSU, 6-4, 6-1.

In the B singles flight, Perez was victorious over Danilo Zivanovic (NMSU), 6-3, 7-6 and then beat Ryan Stotland (UNM), 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Michael Innerebner lost to David Kowalski (UNM), 6-3, 6-1 and was victorious over Zivanovic, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Senior Ryan Davies lost to Nick Ames (UNM), 6-2, 6-3 in the C bracket, while junior David Knaszak was defeated by Brent Salazar (UNM), 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Walker was 2-0 in the D flight as he defeated Ryan Doss (NMSU), 6-0, 6-1 and Spencer Peoples (NMSU), 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, de Groot and Wakeford beat Luis Avila/Zivanovic (NMSU), 8-3 and Archer-Clowes/Mark Roberts (NMSU), 8-3. Innerebner and Walker were victorious over Dan Even/Spencer (NMSU), 9-8. Davies and Perez lost to Coetzee/Kowalski (UNM), 8-5, and beat Salazar/Bart Scott (UNM), 8-6.

The Red Raiders will continue play Saturday, Sept. 21 and conclude the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 22.
