Red Raiders Enjoy Success at Baylor Intercollegiate Tournament

WACO, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team completed the first day of play at the Baylor Intercollegiate Tournament this afternoon in Waco, Texas. Devin Wakeford, Ryan Davies, Michael Innerebner and Diederik de Groot, who all went 2-0 in singles play, led the Red Raiders. In the top half of the men's A singles bracket, senior Devin Wakeford (Cape Town, South Africa) defeated Loren Collins of Texas A&M CC, 6-3, 6-2. Wakeford then fell to Benjamin Becker of Baylor, 6-2,6-4. Sophomore Michael Innerebner (Milan, Italy) defeated Marc Castella of U.L. Lafayette, 6-1, 6-2, as well as David Placendia of Texas A&M CC, 6-1, 6-1. Also finishing up the day 2-0 was freshman Diederik de Groot (Haarlem, Netherlands) who defeated Bucky Mink of Colorado, 6-1, 7-6 and Barry McLaren of Baylor, 6-4, 6-2. In the bottom half of the men's A singles bracket, senior Alfonso Perez (Guadalajara, Mexico) finished the day 1-1 as he defeated Shahzeb Niazi of Texas A&M CC, 6-3, 6-3, and then lost to Drew Hoskins of Texas, 6-2, 6-4. Senior John Walker (Garland, Texas) dropped his first match to Matt Laucks of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-1.
In the men's B singles bracket, sophomore David Knaszak (New Braunfuels, Texas) defeated Christian Oliver of Lamar, 6-0, 6-0, and was victorious over Alon Goldshuv of UT Arlington, 6-4, 6-3. As well as Knaszak, senior Ryan Davies (Corpus Christi, Texas) also ended his day 2-0. Davies received a bye in the first round of play and then defeated Mike Garcia of Baylor, 7-5, 6-3.
The Red Raiders will resume play tomorrow Sept.28 and conclude the tournament Sunday Sept. 29.
