Red Raiders Advance to Finals of ITA Regionals|
Oct. 27, 2009
LUBBOCK, Texas - The rain that delayed Monday's competition at the ITA Texas Regional Championships did not affect the Texas Tech men's tennis team as the Red Raiders advanced a player to the singles final and a doubles team to the finale.
Tech's 25th-ranked Raony Carvalho advanced to the finals of the singles draw, while he and teammate Rafael Garcia will play in the championship match of the doubles draw tomorrow at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
Carvalho started the day by beating No. 30 Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M) 7-6, (7), 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Then in his semifinal match, Carvalho defeated Jeff Dadamo (Texas A&M), 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
In the doubles semifinal match, No. 28 Carvalho and Garcia were victorious over Alexey Grigorov and Marcus Lunt (Texas A&M), 8-3.
"It was a great day for the Red Raiders," said head coach Tim Siegel "It was probably Ray's (Raony) best day as a Red Raider. To beat two of the Aggies' top players in the same day is quite an accomplishment. Ray has matured so much this fall. Ray and Rafael were both outstanding again today. They had great team chemistry and played with so much focus and energy."
Carvalho faces No. 46 Ed Corrie (Texas) in the finals tomorrow at 10 a.m., and the doubles finals will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m., as Carvalho and Garcia take on Dadamo and Krajicek (Texas A&M).
It marks the first time that Tech has ever been in the finals of both singles and doubles. The winners of the singles and doubles finals qualify for the 2009 National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Yale University, Nov. 5-8.
