January 15, 2013

LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 29 Texas Tech opens the 2013 season with doubleheader against Texas-Pan American at 10 a.m. and Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The start of the season is the 21st under the direction of head coach Tim Siegel, who will retire at the end of the season.

"I am excited to see who we can be as a team," said Siegel. "We have a mixture of returning players and newcomers. We have the opportunity to come together as the season progresses."

Texas Tech is coming off of its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships after finishing the year 16-9 and 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders, who finished the season ranked No. 22 last season, finished second overall in the Big 12.

The Red Raiders will begin the season ranked in the ITA Top 75 for the 12th consecutive year, including six times inside the ITA Top 30.

Texas Tech looks to replace the two winningest players in program history - Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho. The pair advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship final, earning All-America honors.

Texas Tech returns five letterwinners from last season - seniors Vitor Manzini, Jeff Bryan, Raphael Pfister and Gabriel Wanderley. The Red Raiders have added the services of five freshmen - Gabriel Dias, Hugo Dojas, Evan Nix, Felipe Soares and Vladimir Tontic.

Texas-Pan American finished 7-10 last season, but enters the 2013 season with an influx of new players. The Broncs roster features four juniors and five freshmen. UTPA is led by freshman Thomas-Orestis Panoulas, who was 4-3 in the fall.

Prairie View A&M was 6-16 last season, but finished second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 5-1 record in league play. The Panthers are paced by senior Ronald Chidzikwe, who earned All-SWAC honors last season.
