Walker and Innerebner Named First Team Academic All-Big 12 for Men's Tennis
April 22, 2003 DALLAS - The Big 12 Conference takes great pleasure in honoring 63 student-athletes who have been named to the 2003 Women's and Men's Tennis Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office announced Tuesday. Texas Tech's John Walker and Michael Innerebner were named to the first team. Special recognition goes to seven student-athletes who were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average, either cumulative or over the two previous semesters. On the women's side these student-athletes are Linda Faltynkova of Oklahoma State, Barbara Schraml of Texas Tech, Paige Brown of Kansas and Jessica Braver and Bethany Griffin of Oklahoma. The men's 4.00 student-athletes include Texas A&M's Ante Matijevic and Oklahoma's Alex Nomicos. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the tennis academic all-league squads consisted of 52 first-team members combined with 11 on the second-team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second-team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her/his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible. Many of these student-athletes will compete at the seventh annual Big 12 Conference Women's and Men's Tennis Tournament, Thursday-Sunday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. The regular-season winners are declared Big 12 men's and women's tennis champions, while the tourney winner is expected to receive first consideration for the conference's automatic bids in the NCAA tournaments. The defending men's tournament champion Baylor won the regular season tennis title this season, posting a perfect 7-0 record in the Big 12. In women's action, the Lady Bears and the Texas A&M women recorded a 9-2 conference mark during 2003 for a share of the women's championship. Baylor will be the No. 1 women's seed at the tournament later this week. Historically, on the men's side three different teams have been crowned Big 12 Tournament champions. Up until last year, the trophy alternated between Texas and Texas A&M, but Baylor ended that streak in winning their first tournament title. The Aggies own the most tourney championships with three. The BU men have captured three of the last four league regular season titles. The Longhorn women have dominated the conference scene since the Big 12's inagural season in 1997. Prior to 2003, they had won the previous six regular season championships and tournaments. Complete results for the Big 12 Tennis Tournament will be available on the league's web site, www.big12sports.com. 2003 WOMEN'S TENNIS ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 TEAM
