LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Felipe Soares has been named an alternate for the 2014 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship, slated for May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 15-20.
Soares, who is ranked No. 60 nationally, is listed as the second alternate for the event. Soares finished the regular season 22-10 in singles, including 7-8 against ITA Top 125 players. Over the last three seasons, the field for the NCAA Singles Championship has had 10 alternates earn a spot in the 64-man lineup.
The last Red Raider to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship was All-American Gonzalo Escobar. If Soares is selected for participation, he would become the 14th Red Raider to appear in the NCAA Individual Championships. The previous 13 players have made 23 appearances in the event.
Soares and the Red Raiders will compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships beginning May 10 in College Station, Texas. The Red Raiders feature the nation's youngest starting lineup. The No. 41 Red Raiders will face No. 17 California on Saturday, May 10. The winner will face the winner of Texas A&M and Alcorn State.
