Escobar And Carvalho Return To NCAA Individual Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Seniors Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho have earned selection to the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships, announced by the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee on Tuesday.
Escobar and Carvalho will participate in the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Doubles Championships, as one of the nation’s top 32 doubles teams. Escobar has also been invited as an at-large selection in the singles competition that features 64 of the top players in the nation.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). The University of Georgia will serve as host. All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
The duo of Escobar and Carvalho, which is currently No. 19 in the nation, paired for the first time this spring and has been seemingly unstoppable. The tandem is 10-1 on the season, including a 5-1 mark against ranked opponents.
Carvalho is making his fourth straight appearance at the NCAA Doubles Championships, while Escobar will be competing in the event for the first time. In all, Carvalho has appeared in the singles competition twice (2009 and 2010) and four times in the doubles competition (2009-12), while Escobar has appeared in three straight singles events (2010-12) and one doubles competition (2012).
Carvalho joins Christian Rojmar as the only two Red Raiders to appear in the NCAA Doubles Championships at least three times. Rojmar advanced to the 2007, 2008 and 2009 editions of the event. Carvalho appeared with Rojmar in 2009 and Rafael Garcia in 2010 and 2011.
Escobar, who is 29-12 on the season, is currently ranked No. 43 nationally. He will be headed to nationals in singles for the third straight year. He joins Bojan Szumanski as the only two Red Raiders to appear in the NCAA Singles Championships three times. Szumanski appeared in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Escobar will now make his third straight appearance (2010, 2011, 2012).
Before the duo competes at the NCAA individual championships, they will lead No. 19 Texas Tech in the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. The Red Raiders open play on May 12 at 11 a.m. CT, when Texas Tech takes on No. 63 Cal Poly in Berkeley, Calif. This is Texas Tech’s sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships and the 12th overall for the program.
